Philanthropy: St. Jude

Phi Delta Chi is committed to raising funds and awareness for worthy causes. One of the most notable causes the fraternity is involved with is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Phi Delta Chi, a professional pharmacy fraternity, develops student leaders to advance the pharmacy profession. The mission of Phi Delta Chi goes hand-in-hand with the mission of St. Jude. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital works to improve the lives of children by striving to provide quality services to patients, thereby advancing public health and strengthening the health professional community. We are proud to have forged a partnership with St. Jude and we look forward to continuing our support for the children they treat and the breakthroughs they make for children all around the world.

In August 1995, Phi Delta Chi adopted St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as its national philanthropic partner at the 60th Grand Council Meeting in Memphis, TN. Phi Delta Chi collegiate and alumni chapters from across the country have raised money and awareness for the hospital, most notably through the Prescription for Hope program.  In August 2007, the Fraternity expanded support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital using a targeted letter-writing campaign called The Prescription for Hope. Through this campaign, the Fraternity pledged to raise $200,000 over 4 years.  In April 2009, Phi Delta Chi surpassed this goal within just 2 years! Upon completion of this commitment, the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s outpatient pharmacy located on the first floor of the Patient Care Center was named in honor of Phi Delta Chi’s commitment.

The Executive Council and Regional Officers acted upon the Grand Council’s desire to continue to support St. Jude by identifying a new goal and naming opportunity. In 2010, Phi Delta Chi announced a new commitment: $1 million over the next 10 years, St. Jude recognized our support with the naming of an adjoining patient/parent room in gratitude of Phi Delta Chi. Patients need the support and love of their families during hospitalizations, yet they also need their own privacy from time to time. Adjoining parent rooms allow the parents to be there for their child when needed, while still giving both parents and patients the privacy they need. The goal of these adjoining patient/parent rooms is to provide comfort and privacy to both patients and parents Through the dedication of our Brothers, friends and family, we were able to meet this goal in just 7 years.

In August 2017, the Phi Delta Chi Executive Council announced another commitment to St. Jude: $1 million over the next 7 years. The pledge gave the fraternity naming rights to the Radiation Oncology Recovery Suite in the Chili's Care Center at St. Jude. This commitment was completed two years earlier than promised.

Introducing our New Commitment…Phi Delta Chi’s Inpatient Discovery Wall

For children who need to be hospitalized, St. Jude's inpatient units exemplify their commitment to creating a caring and comfortable environment, not only for their patients, but for their families as well. The units are airy and bright, with large rooms to accommodate needs of patients, families and staff. Every inpatient room at St. Jude has a connected parent room, so parents can stay by their child’s bedside 24/7, without compromising their own comfort and privacy.

Within the inpatient units, even the hallways are fun and engaging. Four Discovery Walls on each unit encourage children to come out of their rooms to socialize and explore. The Discovery Walls feature colorful, backlit murals and nine flat-panel LCD displays, programmed for gestural interactive play. These walls, designed around the motif of the floor, add magic and whimsy to the inpatient units, distracting children from the stress of their lengthy hospital stays by inspiring play.

The fifth floor of the Kay Research and Care Center—the Neuro-Oncology/Solid Tumor Inpatient Unit—has an Outer Space theme. Stars, planets and astronauts brighten the halls throughout the unit. Two of the walls are educational, teaching children about space and the universe, while the other two are interactive. Touchscreens or motion sensors allow children to play games, either alone or with others.

Our gift of $1 million will name a Discovery Wall in the Neuro-Oncology/Solid Tumor Inpatient Unit in the Kay Research and Care Center. In recognition of our generous gift, a 12-inch by 10-inch acrylic plaque will be displayed in an appropriate spot near the Discovery Wall. Their patients and families will associate Phi Delta Chi with St. Jude’s commitment to helping kids be kids—despite their illness.
