GRAND PAST PRESIDENT

About This Office

The office of the Grand Past President is occupied by the retiring Grand President until that person’s successor shall qualify. The Grand Past President shall provide counsel and assistance to the Grand President and other Fraternity officers and represent the Fraternity on the Board of Directors of the Pharmacy Leadership & Education Institute.

About This Officer: Thomas M. Ellington, PharmD

Dr. Ellington is a native of Melbourne FL but grew up in Northeast Tennessee and considers this his home.

Dr. Ellington was graduated cum laude from East Tennessee State University in 1983 with a Bachelor's of Science. While at ETSU, he double majored in microbiology and chemistry. Following his undergraduate education, he attended the Southern School of Pharmacy of Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he earned his doctor of pharmacy in 1987. The following year he completed a specialty residency in Drug Information at the Southern School of Pharmacy.

In 1988, Dr. Ellington accepted a position as Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1990, Dr. Ellington accepted a faculty appointment at the then Southeastern School of Pharmacy (now Nova Southeastern University) in the drug information service. In 1991, he became the Director of the Drug Information Service. While on the faculty he was inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society and was recognized by Outstanding Young Men in America.

Dr. Ellington joined the faculty at the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy of Shenandoah University in 1997 as an Associate Professor and Director of the Drug Information Service. In January of 2004, Dr. Ellington accepted an appointment as the Director of Experiential Education for the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy of Shenandoah University. In March of 2006, Dr. Ellington stepped down as Director of Experiential Education to devote more time to research and scholarly activities. He currently coordinates a lecture series in drug literature evaluation, and experiential education in drug information or medical writing. His areas of interest include literature evaluation, use of the Internet as a resource tool & electronic resources for use in the drug information center and during the education process. He also serves as a peer reviewer for several pharmacy and research journals.

In addition to his academic career, he has served on several committees for the Florida Society of Health Systems Pharmacist. He has been active in the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, the Virginia Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, The Drug Information Association and Phi Delta Chi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.

Dr. Ellington is married to the former Lori Lawson (1984) and they have two daughters, Victoria (1989) and Kathryn (2000). His interests outside of pharmacy include golf, woodworking, genealogy and gardening.
